Why are my headlights so bad? And why are E-codes the answer?

While the rest of the world got European-spec E-code headlights on their new VW's, archaic U.S. regulations forced car manufacturers to use dumbed-down sealed-beams here in the States, which direct and focus the light much more poorly. That's why so many VW owners decide to upgrade their lighting. Of all the upgrade choices (including LED), E-codes are the best because they have to be tested and certified to meet stringent European and German TUV standards to ensure that they maximize your visibility without blinding oncoming traffic. H4 headlights that are not E-certified (which is most of them; if there's no "E" marking on the lens it's not E-code) do not have to meet any particular specs, so the beam patterns can be all over the place; that's why they're illegal in Europe. The only reason to settle for non E-code H4's (or even off-brand E-codes) used to be cost, but this $69 deal changes everything. These are a direct swap for the standard 7" round headlamps on any VW (or other car) that takes standard 6014/6024 round headlights. Just plug them in and you're ready to go. The only difference you'll notice (besides better visibility) is that the fronts of the lense are nearly flat rather than curved. (Which is how they were all along on most European market vehicles.)

Why these Japanese Koitos in particular?

We've sold E-code headlights from Hella, Bosch, and Cibie for decades and all of them are excellent - but this is our best offer ever. These are the authentic Japanese made (not Chinese) Koitos that headlight "guru" Daniel Stern calls the best E-code headlights available at any price. They were factory supplied on classic European spec Land Cruisers, among other vehicles.  In case the name is new to you, Koito is the "Japanese Hella." They've even partnered with Hella on jointly owned lighting factories. Unlike Hella, Koito's only business is automotive and aircraft lighting, and in fact they are the world's # 1 automotive lighting manufacturer. (Hella is # 2.) We also offer the Hellas (linked below) and you definitely can't go wrong with them. But with this buyout price on the Koitos, in our opinion it's hard to justify paying $30 more for Hellas that are at most equal but not better.

Bulbs for $5/pair!

As with other E-code headlamps, bulbs are not included, but we got a half price deal on matching Japanese made Koito 60/55 watt H4 halogen bulbs (the highest output you can use without having to install relays) - only $5.00 for the PAIR if purchased with the headlights. Choose that option from the above drop-down menu. (If you prefer to use LED bulbs then you can order the headlights "bulbless" and use any H4 sized LED bulbs you like, but see our comments below.)

LED Ready... But are you?

These headlights accept all H4 LED bulbs, but we don't sell those bulbs and still recommend halogen bulbs at this time. Why? Because retrofit LED's (for vehicles not factory-equipped with LED headlamps) still aren't quite ready for prime time. That's why the top tier bulb suppliers (like Hella and Koito) don't offer them, and instead the market is flooded with no-name Chinese ones. The beam pattern tends to be odd (either blinding oncoming traffic, or not illuminating the road evenly), and reliability, QC, and lifespan are inconsistent. (Also they don't generate heat so they won't melt snow that hits your headlights.) As LED bulb technology improves you can always swap out LED bulbs in minutes (any H4 sized LED bulb drops right in), so nothing stops you from switching to LED anytime you like. But we recommend trying the Koito Halogens first for the whopping five bucks, and you'll probably forget all about LED.

Optional Relay Kit and High-Output Bulbs (Vanagon Only):

If you have an '80-85 Vanagon, you can go even a step further by adding relays and high-output 90-100 watt bulbs. That is the ultimate upgrade for your Vanagon - nothing else even comes close. It also bypasses bad grounds and trouble points in your headlight wiring, improving reliability. See the VisionKit below, which includes the same Koito headlights plus the high-output bulbs and relays, all in one package at a discounted price.
