Note to Vanagon owners: This is a square palstic filter that goes BEFORE the fuel pump (between the engine and the pump). While it is by far the most common one used on '80-85 Vanagons, some '83-85 Vanagons may have a metal canister filter AFTER the fuel pump instead, or even have both. If unsure, take a peek underneath your Vanagon toward the center and see what you have.
