ZeroRust is designed to be painted right over rust, encapsulating it and starving it of oxygen so it can't grow. It's highly concentrated and therefore more effective than other products claimed to be similar. Its closest competitor in terms of effectiveness is POR15, which we also sell. Both products are rated at the same 2000 hours using the industry standard ASTM B117 salt/spray test, which simulates long-term exposure. To put that in perspective, conventionally primed/painted steel starts to rust in as little as 96 hours under the same test (!!!) and even professional industrial strength two-part epoxy primer (which is expensive, hard to use, and can't be applied over rust) lasts only 1500-1800 hours.
When is ZeroRust better? We have customers who swear by one or the other, but compared to POR15, ZeroRust is MUCH easier to work with. It requires minimum surface prep, unlike POR15. Just remove any loose rust, clean the surface, and spray it right over the remaining rust. Its black finish can be painted over but doesn’t have to be. Once you're done it stores just like paint, so if you don't finish the can you can save it for next time. By comparison, POR15 cures very quickly once exposed to air and humidity, making it hard to store and use again, and impossible to sell in spray cans because it would clog too fast.
When is POR15 better? Have rust in a noticeable area, like a rocker panel, body seams, below the windows? That's where POR15 has the edge, because they offer a clear version for visible areas, and if it overruns onto the paint slightly you can hardly tell. (ZeroRust also makes a clear version, but it's less effective than their black version.) POR15 does require a bit more prep, but if you're using it on the body of your VW you can reach those areas easily to prep them. We offer the clear POR15 in quarts, linked below. So... ZeroRust for hard-to-reach and non-visible areas, and POR15 for visible areas ... a 1-2 punch!
We also offer ZeroRust in quart containers (linked below), for areas where you can brush it on - chassis components, undercarriage and floors, etc. You get a lot more for the buck by the quart, so the quart is worth buying if you have a large area to cover and easy access. If you have a sprayer you can also spray it on.
Once you've treated your rust, you can protect it even more with our Waxoyl Rustproofing, Waxoyl Underbody Sealant, and Seam Sealer.
None of these replaces metal. Quality rust treatments can stop surface rust for years if properly applied, but they can't replace metal that's already gone. If you have rust holes or areas that have already become very thin, the correct solution is to cut the rust out entirely and replace it with brand new metal. For those areas, we offer a full assortment of premium quality replacement metal for most VW models.
NOTE: Spray cans cannot be shipped by air - so no Fedex Overnight, 2nd Day, or overseas orders. (Canada is OK.) Sorry.
